Leaf Cylinder Beetles - subfamily Cryptocephalinae

FAMILY CHRYSOMELIDAE

This page contains pictures and information about Leaf beetles in subfamily Cryptocephalinae that we found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia.

Adult females in this subfamily coat their eggs individually in faecal material and the larvae are obligate case-bearers. When the larvae hatch from the eggs, they open the roof of the egg case. then extend their head and legs from the opening, flip the case over their back and crawl away.

Aporocera speciosa, body length 8mm
We found this Leaf Beetle once on a She-oak (Casuarina sp.) in Wishart during mid summer. Please check this page for more information.

Iridescent Leaf Cylinder Beetle

Aporocera iridipennis or Aporocera viridipennis, body length 3mm
We saw this beetle (first photo) in Karawatha Park. It flied away after we took the above photo. Its body is bright orange-red in colour, covered by the metallic dark green wing-covers. Its head, legs and antenna are all black. We saw it again (the second photo) in Karawatha Park the next year. Again, it flied away after we took the one photo. Please also check this page for more information.
