Family Machaerotidae - Tube Spittlebugs

Tube Spittlebug Nymph

They are commonly known as Tube Spittlebugs because the nymphs build and live in calcareous tubes attached to the stems of food plants. The nymphs immersed in their liquid excretions. Their host plants are usually eucalypts. Adults are usually greenish- yellow or black in colours.

Pictures was taken in Karawatha Forest on Sep 2007. The planthopper was mainly dull brown and grey with whitish markings.

Pictures taken in Karawatha Forest on early summer. We believe this is the nymph in family Cicadellidae.

The ant was attending a flat insect on a Acacia leaf. We think the flat insect could be the leafhopper young instars.
