Tangle-veined Flies - Family Nemestrinidae

This page contains pictures and information about Tangle-veined Flies that we found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia

This family is easily recognised by the complex wing venation. The fly is usually large to medium size with hairy body. The larvae are parasitic on insects includes grasshoppers.

Atriadops sp., body length 10mm
Pictures were taken in Alexandra Hill bushland. The second picture shows the fly get caught in a spider web. We thought this fly was a Beefly in family Bombyliidae. Dr Christine Lambkin send us email advised that this should be a member of the Family Nemestrinidae and the genus Atriadops.

Trichophthalma sp., body length 15mm
The fly is golden yellowish-brown in colour, with large and pointy abdomen. Its body is covered with short hairs. Its large pair of dark red compound eyes covered most of its head. It has the long mouth parts. Its pair of wings is tinted in brown. At first sight in the field we thought this is a Beefly. Went back home and looked at the photos, from its complex wing veins, we recognized it is a Tangle-veined Fly. We have more pictures and information in this page.
