Flatid Planthoppers - Family Flatidae

Order Hemiptera

This page contains pictures and information about Flatid Planthoppers that we found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia.

Flatid Planthopper nymph

Planthopper in family Flatidae are small to medium size plant-feeding insects. Their colours are from pale green, through yellow-green to brown.  The hind legs have one or two spurs.

Adults have the triangular and broad fore wings. They held wings vertically when in rest. All of them jump, so their name planthoppers.

Mango Planthopper

Colgaroides acuminata, subfamily Flatinae, tribe Flatini, body length 15mm
This Planthopper is creamy green in colour with a tiny pinkish-brown dot at the middle of each front wing. It is common un Brisbane and can be found on stem of different plants. More information and pictures can be found in this page.

Pink Planthopper

Colgar sp., subfamily Flatinae, tribe Flatini, body length 15mm
We took this picture on White Hill during early winter. The Planthopper is creamy white in colour with pink wing edges. Check this page for more infromation.

Green Mottled Planthopper

Siphanta hebes, subfamily Flatinae, tribe Siphantini body length 15mm
This Green Planthopper is triangular in shape with pink eyes and a pointed head. The forewings cover the body like sloping roof when it rests. This species has the dot patterns on the wings with brown wing edges. Check this page for more information.

Newly Hatched Flatid Planthopper Nymphs

? Colgaroides or Colgar sp., body length 2mm
Those newly hatched hoppers were found on Acacia leaf during early summer. Chris Freebairn sent us email advised that " they are are flatid nymphs (Family Flatidae) - possibly mango planthopper (MPH) Colgaroides acuminata, though the egg raft does not look quite right for this species and the bands on the nymphs look a bit different  too. Maybe a species of Colgar."
